Roads must reflect a 21st-century city in an advanced economy of a developed country.
Poor road surfaces result in injuries to motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Poor road surfaces cause damage to motor vehicles – both private and public vehicles.
The breakdown of TTC buses due to poor road surface creates added operating and maintenance costs for the TTC and unnecessary delays for commuters.
Ambulance vehicles torment injured patients while transporting them to hospital on bumpy, potholed roads that cause vehicle vibration and passenger shaking, jolting, and bouncing – inappropriate ambulance transportation - a total disregard for the injured.
The City of Toronto must ensure that road surfaces provide a smooth, safe pavement surface for all road users. Quit using potholes as speed bumps.
Improve Capacity
Time is money. Increasing congestion, longer commute times, and the increasing demand for and cost of energy drain financial resources and increase the cost of doing business in Toronto. Transportation costs are, ultimately, borne by consumers through higher retail prices.
Successive, myopic, municipal and provincial governments have repeatedly failed to improve Toronto's road capacity while continuing to approve major developments. There is no viable city without an efficient road network.
Toronto requires immediate widening of arterial roads. We must construct the extensions that were approved by Metro Council in the 1960s, rebuild that East Gardiner Expressway Extension that was demolished in 2001, and complete it to the 401 as planned. If road allowances are not wide enough, then build elevated roads. We put the Eglinton LRT on the road; so, we'll have to take the vehicular traffic below grade. Current congestion levels indicate that there is insufficient road capacity. We need more roads now!
Where are the setback requirements and land dedications in all of the proposed high-rise, high-density developments along Eglinton Ave, east of Victoria Park, that will allow for the widening of Eglinton Ave?
I will not support any high-density development that does not allow for road widening.

The lifespan of road pavement is 35 years, at which point it must be removed and replaced with new road pavement. Filling potholes on continuously cracking, buckling, and breaking road asphalt is a waster of resources. Many of the roads in Scarborough Centre - Don Valley East were originally built around 1960. They were repaved in the early 1990s. We are now in 2026, and most roads have past their "best before" dates.
It is important to review the standards and specifications for road paving to ensure a durable and lasting surface. In the 1960s, concrete curbs had a depth of 3 feet – not quite frost depth. In the 1990s, that concrete curb was replaced by one with a depth of about 18 inches. Today, a new concrete curb will be about 9 inches deep. When the standards drop, we can expect a reduced lifespan which requires more frequent replacements. Review the specifications for road construction.
Snow-melt systems for roads melt snow and ice using electric resistance cables or hydronic fluid pipes embedded beneath the pavement. They are used in cold-climate cities worldwide. Prominent implementations in:
